Towards a Sovereign European Cloud-to-Edge Continuum

NOUS FINAL EVENT: Towards a Sovereign European Cloud-to-Edge Continuum

NOUS (A catalyst for EuropeaN ClOUd Services in the era of data spaces, high-performance and edge computing) is a Horizon Europe-funded initiative dedicated to building a federated and sovereign European cloud ecosystem that seamlessly integrates edge computing, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and emerging quantum resources. By enabling scalable compute and storage capabilities across the entire continuum, from IoT devices to supercomputers, NOUS supports the secure and efficient management of data throughout its lifecycle, ensuring trust, privacy, and governance.

Through this approach, NOUS empowers researchers, public institutions, and industry to process and share large-scale data workloads across Europe, reducing reliance on non-European cloud providers and strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty. Its open-source architecture, secure “darknet” overlay, and interoperability with key European initiatives such as Gaia-X, FIWARE, EOSC, and Data Spaces position NOUS as a foundational pillar of the future European digital ecosystem.

This event marks the culmination of the NOUS project, presenting its vision, achievements, and long-term impact in establishing a seamless cloud-to-edge continuum.

Participants will gain insights into the project’s core technological pillars, including:

  • Advanced orchestration of high-performance computing resources
  • Intelligent and adaptive edge processing
  • Secure, trustworthy, and sovereign data management

At the heart of these developments lies the NOUS open-source architecture, now publicly available through Eclipse Research Labs’ GitLab, enabling further adoption, extension, and community-driven innovation in distributed computing environments.

The session will also showcase the project’s real-world impact through four representative use cases:

  • Connected Vehicle Perception
  • Energy Prediction and Data Lifecycle Management
  • Crisis Management and Civil Protection
  • Scientific Data Management, HPC Storage, and AI Analytics

In addition, the session will highlight collaborations and synergies with related European initiatives, contributing to a cohesive and interoperable ecosystem for sovereign distributed AI.

Join us in this final event to engage with the NOUS consortium, explore its open-source innovations, and discover how these results can be leveraged in future research and industrial applications.
